How Conscious Are You Really?(Here’s How to Find Out)

Most people think they’re self-aware.

They’re not.

And I don’t mean that as an insult. I mean that self-awareness isn’t a personality trait it’s a practice. A daily, deliberate, uncomfortable practice of stepping back and becoming a witness to yourself. Watching how your emotional body, your mental body, and your physical body respond to the world around you. Catching yourself in the global statements. Everyone is like this. Nobody does that. I never do this.

Those aren’t observations. Those are flags. Unconscious ones.

Right?

Here’s the other one. “That’s just how I was raised.” “That’s what my pastor taught me.” “That’s what we do in my family.” None of those are wrong on their face. But if you’ve never stopped to ask why you believe what you believe if you’ve never run your own values through a critical lens then you don’t actually own them. You inherited them. And inherited beliefs you’ve never examined will run your life without your permission.

Here’s the hard truth about humans: we don’t have a great relationship with truth. We’d rather have a story that makes our world make sense than deal with what’s actually true. Republicans do it. Democrats do it. Trump supporters do it. Trump haters do it. We all do it.

The question is are you willing to catch yourself doing it?

Because until you are, you’re not responding to life. You’re just reacting to it. Stimulus. Response. No consciousness in between.

Listen more. Talk less. Ask better questions.
